As the owner of TrailsWeb I'm always looking for ways to make the company more efficient. Whether it means my servers use less power or I don't print invoices anymore, there's always ways to improve the way the company runs for the betterment of all.

One of our long time customers, R. Todd Henderson of the Henderson Companies, has a project in the works and invited me to participate in the green building initiative at its core. Todd's project is a custom development which qualifies for LEED certification. LEED is a set of regulations from the US Green Building Council with such rigorous criteria as parking fee discounts of at least 20% for residents with low emissions vehicles and exceeding local open space zoning requirements by 25%.

Use of renewable resources, minimizing impact of development, providing a healthy work environment and a safe and healthy living environment, and tons of other great criteria are all spelled out in exacting, measurable detail in the LEED guidelines.

Todd let TrailsWeb tag along on the LEED adventure and I'm very glad he did. While constantly looking for ways to integrate my servers with the daily operations of my business - like providing tech support over the phone and handling invoicing and payment processing, it's always near the top of the priorities to design the systems in a way that they can be self-powered and brutally efficient.

AZ Wine Country is the new Napa Valley?

On my recent road trip across the United States, I visited many places. One place I visited that really sticks out in my mind is the Napa Valley. It was really exciting because I love wine and beautiful scenery, and the Napa Valley has both.

When I moved to Flagstaff, I found out that Arizona wine country is quickly becoming more popular for local experimental wines. I went to Flagstaff wine stores to try to find some unique varietals, but couldn't find anything local until I stumbled upon Vino Loco.

I found out that they do Arizona wine tours, and was really excited to try to get my parents to come and visit me. I just know they'd love to go on an Arizona wine tour while they're out here. This is the only place I've heard of around here to do that kind of thing. A tour of the breathtaking Arizona wine country is something I can't believe more people don't offer.

I've heard of Flagstaff wine tastings, which happen to be a lot of fun. But as far as a tour of different vineyards, or going "vineyard hopping," I haven't heard anything about it until now. I think most Flagstaff wine stores have a great variety of wine, but most just carry popular brands. Vino Loco is the only one I've found that actually has a unique variety of fun, fancy and affordable bottles of wine. Now I can't wait until their next Flagstaff wine tasting.

LiftMaster 971LM: The king of all garage door remotes. At least that's what I think, anyway. It's hard to give a definitive answer as to whether or not there's one make or model that is the best of the best. If there is, then the LiftMaster 371LM is definitely a close second, with the Allstar Classic 318MHz not far behind.

I'm more tempted to call it a tie between all three, but the security features of the LiftMaster 971LM might just push it to take the lead. I'm sure it's not something most people think about on a daily basis, but if you're looking to upgrade your home from a manual to an automatic garage door opener, you might give it some thought.

After all of the searching I've done I've come to the conclusion that if your main concern is security, the LiftMaster 971LM is the remote to choose. If you already have a system installed, and the LiftMaster 371LM is compatible, it's definitely a simple and solid choice. Last but not least the Allstar Classic is a foolproof solution to any remote need.

I've always dreamed of having a futuristic home. A modern kitchen, wide open living spaces, high ceilings and a good flow of energy throughout my home are things I'd love to have. My preferred Flagstaff builder happens to be Henderson Construction Companies. In fact, the only Flagstaff contractor I'd call to update my bathroom or remodel my living room is Henderson. From Tucson carpet cleaning to wood floor restoration, Cactus Carpet Care can do it all. I've seen the worst carpet stains lifted from the fibers they were nestled in. I've never seen Tucson carpet cleaners work so efficiently before.

I'm about to move in a few weeks, and I'm pretty sure that my new home will have carpets. In Search of Marantec

I was recently informed that the house I am currently renting is up for sale. We only have a few weeks to find a new place to live; but with the current housing market conditions this shouldn't be a problem. My room mates seem to have very specific qualities they are looking for in a new home. One of those qualities is a house with an automatic garage door. Since I've done quite a bit of research on the subject lately, I suggested that we look at the brands for a Marantec RS-02. Even better would be to find a garage that uses the Marantec M3-3313 model remote.
In spite of that being so specific, I'm sure we'll find a home that meets all of our needs. While it would be really nice to find one that uses the Marantec M3-3313, I think we'd all be comfortable settling for the Marantec M3-2312 if that's available. Of course, we all know that is such a miniscule detail to look for in a house, and certianly wouldn't be a make-or-break-it scenario if we didn't have it.

I just happen to know how well the Marantec M3-2312 works, and that it seems to be a very popular item. That also tells me that it might not be as difficult to find as it seems. If we can't find garage door openers compatible with those remotes, we'd at least like to find one that uses the Marantec RS-02. I'm sure that we'll be happy wherever we end up. But it definitely would be nice to be able to settle into a house knowing that our garage door opener is top of the line.

I have a bad habit of spilling everything from wine to pasta sauce on the floor. I've been writing copy for website development here at TrailsWeb for over two years now. I especially like writing for local small businesses. My favorite small businesses are local restaurants with lots of character.

So, I was happy to be asked to write content for Pancho McGillicuddy's Mexican Bar & Grill and Doc Holliday's Steakhouse & Saloon, both in charming little Williams, AZ, about 30 miles west of Flagstaff.

Pancho McGillicuddy's with his Mexican cuisine and colorful decor has been my first choice in Williams, AZ mexican restaurants since it opened in 1993.

Hatch River Expeditions has been in the Colorado River Rafting business since 1929. It all began when "Bus" Hatch turned his weekend obsession with exploring wild places, and white water rivers into a way of life for the Hatch family.

Born in 1907, Robert Rafael "Bus" Hatch was a carpenter in Jensen, Utah by trade, but he couldn't leave wild rivers and canyons alone. In the late 1920's, Bus and a few of his brothers and cousins took some homemade wooden boats down the Green River to explore its mysterious canyons. It was a dangerous, and (some might say) stupid idea. Folks thought they were crazy. Maybe they were. They had a few false starts and bad runs, including once losing all their provisions. They finally developed a workable boat design and completed the run.

Bus was hooked. Despite some irritated (and lonely) wives, Bus and his crew continued their wild white water river running adventures. Having conquered the Green and Yampa rivers, the "Dusty Dozen" as he and his buddies were called, moved on to other treacherous river canyons, including Cataract Canyon, known as the "Graveyard of the Colorado". The Dusty Dozen was among the first 100 people to survive a Colorado River Run through the Grand Canyon. They were also one of the very first parties to complete the Middle Fork of the Salmon River in the Idaho Wilderness.

Word got out of Bus' skills and experience in white water river running, especially in the Grand Canyon. Bus was being called upon more and more to take parties of surveyors, engineers, fishermen, hunters and plain old thrill seekers down rivers. When he realized people would be happy to pay him for his river running service and expertise, he cut back on his carpentry work and found himself running the very first professional river running company, Hatch River Expeditions.

Bus got his sons, Gus, Frank, Don and Ted involved....They got their children involved. And so it continues. Proprietors Rick Hatch, Bus Hatch's grandson, and his wife Sara are thrilled to bring the family's adventurous tradition of Grand Canyon white water rafting and Grand Canyon exploring to anyone who desires this amazing experience.

My husband was a bankruptcy lawyer. A client couldn't pay his attorney fees and so he gave my husband an RV, which he was thrilled to accept. Arizona RV parks, here we come!

He and I began touring RV parks in and around Northern Arizona on weekends in 2004. Of all the RV Parks in Arizona, our favorite was Zane Grey RV Park in Camp Verde on the banks of Clear Creek. It was serene and perfectly positioned on Clear Creek in historic Camp Verde, near Sedona, Jerome, and wildly gorgeous biking and hiking trails.

Recently the building TrailsWeb is in was bought by some new investors. Two of them are co-owners of Showtime Dirt Works. After moving into one of the suites across the courtyard from us, they asked us about building a site for them. While we were working on ShowtimeDirtWorks.com, touting their expertise in Northern Arizona landscaping design and technique, they had us work on another software project.

In their office, they mounted a plasma TV facing the courtyard. The TV displays a slideshow of pictures they took of their work. Concerned with the energy efficiency of their display they had TrailsWeb write a screensaver that turns off the computer and TV each night at 7:00PM and automatically start back up again each morning at 7:00AM.

With a few hurdles to overcome, we were able to supply an application which uses DirectX to efficiently fade the images on the screen and simultaneously automate the computer's power state. Using a technology called ACPI, the screensaver shuts the computer down at night, with the TV shutting down when the signal disappears, and schedules the computer's restart the following morning. When the timer goes off, the computer boots back up and the screensaver resumes fading images of their landscapes for interested onlookers to see.

Demonstrating our expertise with both website and software development, Rob has suggested partnering up for a larger scale web-based business. Hopefully, the next post will be declaring the new project underway...

The American economy is quickly hardening forcing us small business owners to cut out everything optional and trim down the essentials. Amidst the struggle to stay afloat through this storm we've had our phones turned off, answered numerous collections calls, and fended off the amateur pleas from India to outsource our graphic design and development work.

Most of our clients are the ones that genuinely believe in advertising. When I read our local paper I see their logos, and the Chamber of Commerce newsletter is packed with their flyers.

Our latest strategy for growing in the middle of a difficult economy revolves around bringing a new level of quality and service to the table. We're looking to tighten our relationships with our clients, finding new and creative partnerships that are mutually beneficial.
